Intensity Discrimination and the Stationary State
نویسنده
چکیده
1. A method of experimentation is described which enables one to record objectively and quantitatively the discrimination by Mya between two intensities of illumination to which it is successively exposed. The indicator for this discrimination is a response at a given reaction time. 2. From the data so obtained it is found that the difference, DeltaI, between the two intensities bears no constant relation to the initial intensity, I. Instead, the ratio See PDF for Equation varies in a consistent manner with I. As the latter increases, the ratio decreases to a certain point, after which it increases. 3. The data are analyzed in terms of the photochemical mechanism previously proposed for the sensitivity of Mya to light. It is shown that for the animal to discriminate by means of a given reaction between one intensity and another, the transition from one to the other must be accompanied by the decomposition of a constant amount of photosensitive substance in the sense organ. 4. A mathematical treatment of the behavior of the photochemical mechanism shows not only that the ratio See PDF for Equation cannot be constant as required by the Weber-Fechner law, but that it must vary in the way in which it does. The behavior of Mya under these conditions, therefore, supports the validity of the hypothetical physicochemical mechanism suggested for its sensitivity.

Background: The main result of hearing impairment is reduction of speech perception. Patient with auditory neuropathy can hear but they can not understand. Their difficulties have been traced to timing related deficits, revealing the importance of the neural encoding of timing cues for understanding speech. Objective: In the present study psychoacoustic perception (minimal noticeable differen...
متن کاملThe Approach of Convergence to Stationary State of Multi Server Queue with Balking (TECHNICAL NOTE)
This investigation deals with multi server queue with balking. The customers arrive in poisson fashion and independent of time, under the assumption that system is initially empty. The number of customers in the system is stochastically increasing and distributed in steady state (stationary state) as required. The expressions for the measure of the speed of convergence from transient state to s...
متن کاملChange Point Estimation of the Stationary State in Auto Regressive Moving Average Models, Using Maximum Likelihood Estimation and Singular Value Decomposition-based Filtering
In this paper, for the first time, the subject of change point estimation has been utilized in the stationary state of auto regressive moving average (ARMA) (1, 1). In the monitoring phase, in case the features of the question pursue a time series, i.e., ARMA(1,1), on the basis of the maximum likelihood technique, an approach will be developed for the estimation of the stationary state’s change...
متن کاملSecond Moment of Queue Size with Stationary Arrival Processes and Arbitrary Queue Discipline
In this paper we consider a queuing system in which the service times of customers are independent and identically distributed random variables, the arrival process is stationary and has the property of orderliness, and the queue discipline is arbitrary. For this queuing system we obtain the steady state second moment of the queue size in terms of the stationary waiting time distribution of a s...
متن کاملPathologies cardiac discrimination using the Fast Fourir Transform (FFT) The short time Fourier transforms (STFT) and the Wigner distribution (WD)
This paper is concerned with a synthesis study of the fast Fourier transform (FFT), the short time Fourier transform (STFT and the Wigner distribution (WD) in analysing the phonocardiogram signal (PCG) or heart cardiac sounds. The FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) can provide a basic understanding of the frequency contents of the heart sounds. The STFT is obtained by calculating the Fourier tran...
